Quincy City Hall Fire - Sponge Blasting

How Does Sponge Blasting Work?

Pressurized Feed Units propel Sponge Media abrasives to the surface. A centralized control panel provides adjustment of blast pressure and media feed rate allowing for precise control.

Over 25 different types of media Sponge Media are available. Each with a different abrasive or cleaning agent bonded in the Sponge.

Sponge media flattens on impact, exposing abrasive, cleaning, abrading and profiling the surface.

Sponge cells expand, creating vacuum – pulling in debris

Media traps hazardous particles that would have become airborne and rebound with low energy; making cleanup and containment easy.

Recyclers clean and classify sponge media for reuse, separating media from oversized debris and fine waste.  95% of media is recycled.

Commercial Pressure Washing

The owner of this food plant, where peanuts were used in manufacturing, called in SERVPRO of Lynn/Lynnfield to pressure wash the entire structure from peanut dust/oil before he sold the building.

What is an Industrial Hygienist?

Industrial hygienists (IH) are specialists who tend to approach indoor mold conditions primarily from a scientific perspective.   They are trained to take air samples and surface samples of visually apparent mold.  These samples are then analyzed in a laboratory or occasionally on site.

The IH will then take all the information gathered and write a mold remediation protocol for their client. The mold remediation protocol contains in writing the recommended scope of work necessary to bring the interior air quality to within acceptable levels.  The client then gives that written protocol to a qualified mold remediation company, such as SERVPRO of Lynn/Lynnfield, to remediate the mold following the protocol set forth by the IH.

Check Under Those Cabinets!

Every now and then look take a look under cabinets with plumbing fixtures.  Plumbing fixtures underneath a sink can wear out with age and develop leaks. If left untreated, water damage will emerge in the form of mold and/or rot on wooden surfaces.

Is Water from Storm Flooding Contaminated?

Yes!  The water from oceans, lakes, rivers or streams is considered Category 3 Water.

Category 3 Water,  is known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water.

NY Museum and Collections Affected by Storm

These priceless collections were affected by flooding during a hurricane in New York.  SERVPRO of Lynn/Lynnfield's Storm Team was quickly onsite to assist the museum and restore the property.

Flash Flood Myths

SERVPRO of Lynn/Lynnfield was called in to assist with water intrusion from flash flooding last night in this apartment building lobby.

Myth: SUVs, pickups and other large vehicle are safe to drive through floodwaters.

Fact: Just two feet of water can float most vehicles and, if the water is moving quickly, vehicles can be swept away. If you come to a flooded road, turn around and go another way.

Myth: Flash floods only occur near streams and rivers.

Fact: Flash floods also occur in areas where no streams are present, even urban areas.

Myth: You can walk through floodwaters as long as the water is not too deep.

Fact: Always avoid floodwaters. Just six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off your feet. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way.

Why Pipes Burst

Surprisingly, ice forming in a pipe does not typically cause a break where the ice blockage occurs. It’s not the radial expansion of ice against the wall of the pipe that causes the break. Rather, following a complete ice blockage in a pipe, continued freezing and expansion inside the pipe causes water pressure to increase downstream -- between the ice blockage and a closed faucet at the end. It’s this increase in water pressure that leads to pipe failure. Usually the pipe bursts where little or no ice has formed.

Fire Cleaning Chem Sponges

The Chem Sponge is used for removal of dry dirt, dust, hair and smoke/soot residues. On a lot of surfaces we try to avoid wet cleaning which often leads to smearing, smudging or staining and we can actually do more damage on certain surfaces than the fire did. These 2″ thick, porous dry cleaning chemical sponges are used primarily in smoke and soot removal in fire damage jobs. They work like large “erasers”, these rubber sponges drawing the dust, soot and smoke residue into the cells of the sponge material.

Wainscoting Affected by Ice Dams

Water intrusion behind the walls caused by ice dams has affected this dining room wainscoting.  Water has caused the paint to bubble and the molding to swell and pull away from the wood.

Always Check the Basement!

The owner of this home was away overseas and the caretaker only checked on the upstairs rooms.  When the owner returned the entire basement was completely infested with mold from a water intrusion. The entire basement needed to be gutted and remediated.

Flash Flooding in Lynn, MA

The combination of high tide and torrential rain led to flash floods across the North Shore.  Particularly hard hit was the Munroe Street area in Lynn.  SERVPRO of Lynn/Lynnfield was onsite during the flooding assisting many commercial  properties with flooding and water damage.

DIRECTED HEAT DRYING™

TES - Thermal Energy System

TES is a unique water damage restoration system that utilizes Directed Heat Drying™ and the "Reets Evaporation Method" combining controlled heat and air flow to produce high-speed evaporation, dramatically improving the drying process for the fastest drying ever!

Powerful Air Movers Help Drying Process

Air Movers are used during water damage restoration to help speed the drying and dehumidification process. Placed properly, they can drastically speed up the time it takes to bring a property back to preloss condition

Low Grain Refrigerant Dehumidifiers

LGR Dehumidifiers are an essential tool in the drying and restoration process. SERVPRO has the largest supply of dehumidifiers nationwide, and we can have as many needed on a jobsite within 12 hours.

Ozone Generator

Ozone generators can have many applications in the restoration process. Used to combat heavy odors, ozone generation changes the chemical makeup of the oxygen, helping to remove odors from fire damages, biohazard contamination, animal odors, and more.

Desiccant Dehumidifier on Commercial Building

Trailer mounted Desiccant Dehumidifiers can often be the ideal and only way to dry large buildings with excessive water damage and moisture, Designed to supply the building with extremely dry air, SERVPRO can have these delivered to a jobsite often times the same day to begin the drying process.

Moisture Meter

When you call us for a water damage, our production manager may use a moisture meter to test whether there is any water hiding underneath the floors or inside the walls. This is the same moisture meter we will use throughout the job to record the moisture readings and document our success.

In every water restoration job, our goal is to return the building to its preloss condition. In some buildings, this will require we take readings in unaffected rooms to determine the target for preloss condition.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

SERVPRO professionals use PPE (personal protective equipment) that consists of safety goggles, rubber boots, rubber gloves, full body protective gear, and a respirator designed for areas with high moisture levels. The respirator, in particular, is important because it prevents our technicians from inhaling airborne contaminants, such as mold, during the restoration process.

Containment in Use During Mold Remediation

SERVPRO uses various containment procedures to prevent the spread of mold, soot, construction dust or other contaminates. We may also use advanced containment procedures like negative air chambers to isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the contaminates from spreading during the cleanup process. All fans and heating and cooling systems will be turned off to prevent any cross contamination.

What Is Thermal Imaging?

In the most basic of terms, thermal imaging allows you too see an object’s heat radiating off itself (see this cat who was trapped in a wall..and rescued!!). Thermal cameras more or less record the temperature of various objects in the frame, and then assign each temperature a shade of a color, which lets you see how much heat its radiating compared to objects around it.

Colder temperatures are often given a shade of blue, purple, or green, while warmer temperatures can be assigned a shade of red, orange, or yellow.

The use of thermal imaging cameras can be a beneficial tool at SERVPRO when trying to find hidden moisture within wall cavities and building content. Our project managers are specialized in reading temperature differentials, which can help track the migration of water through brick walls, hidden insulation, and more.

Covered Stairs to Avoid Tracking of Contaminates

During a fire or soot cleanup SERVPRO technicians cover stairs and areas that are not affected with plastic poly sheeting and stick pads to avoid tracking and cross contamination of soot particles.

Mushrooms Growing in the Carpet?

Yes! Carpet mushroom are a real thing.  SERPVRO Lynn/Lynnfield was called to inspect this bathroom in the basement of a commercial building that was seldom used.

Bathrooms are particularly well-suited for sprouting mushrooms. High heat, excess moisture and low lighting provide the perfect growing conditions that allow mushrooms to flourish on bathroom carpets, floors, walls or even ceilings, particularly around areas where moisture collects or pools.

Post Construction Cleaning of Hospital Cafeteria

Union Hospital asked SERVPRO of Lynn/Lynnfield to come in and do a post construction cleaning of their cafeteria.  Six of our crew members worked all night to make sure the cafeteria would be sparkling clean and just in time to reopen in the morning for breakfast.
